When We Need a Break From the Sun, We Head to the Coolest Spot in Amsterdam
The Lowdown
When the sun beats down on Amsterdam, the city can suddenly feel short on something surprisingly essential: shade.
On the days when the city calls for a little respite from the sun and the children need more than another playground stop, this is where we head: Amsterdamse Bos. Beneath its vast canopy of trees, shaded play trails and perfect little pockets for picnics, it feels cooler, calmer and a world away from the heat of the city.
Too often, Amsterdam's playgrounds can feel remarkably well designed for capturing every available ray of sunshine. Lovely in April, considerably less appealing at midday in July. The Bos offers something increasingly precious in summer: actual shade — the kind where children can run, explore and play without everyone feeling slightly overheated and mildly irritable.
The Vibe
While the city's parks are wonderful for a stroll with a coffee in hand or an impromptu playground stop, they still carry the rhythm of the city: busy paths and cyclists whizzing past.
The Bos feels different. The paths are quieter, the trees taller and the pace noticeably slower.
There are, of course, plenty of organised activities, but what we return for, time and again, is something simpler: the chance to get slightly lost in nature together.
Play & Explore
Of course, there is the goat farm and the ever-popular pancake house, both firmly established on the Amsterdamse Bos family circuit. But the real magic lies along the Beleefpad.
Winding beneath a canopy of trees, this adventure trail leads children through the forest via a series of natural play structures, each marked by an animal and QR code that unlocks a task or activity. Yet the beauty of the route lies just as much in the freedom it offers.
Wooden huts become hideouts, bridges turn into rivers to cross and beams, ropes and climbing structures quickly transform into obstacle courses and imaginary worlds.
Unlike many city playgrounds, the Beleefpad doesn't ask children to play in a particular way. Instead, it gives them the freedom to explore, invent and learn about the local biodiversity along the way.
Where are we Eating?
The best option in the Bos is almost always a picnic. The Beleefpad, in particular, offers endless opportunities to eat amongst nature — under an umbrella of trees, perched on a miniature tree stump, or somewhere loosely arranged into one of those perfectly formed circles of logs — because not even the forest can escape a good ‘kring!’
That said, if you are in the mood for something a little more civilised — actual umbrellas, proper chairs and food arriving at your table — the De Bosbaan restaurant is our favourite place to grab a bite. Its chic, spacious, terrace overlooks the vast rowing lake, offering a completely different perspective on the Bos: open water, big skies and very good flat whites.
Worth the Hype?
The Bos is at its most appealing on the hottest days, when the city feels heavy and you just need shade, space and a change of pace. Here, children are free to explore, climb and invent their own worlds with nothing more than the forest around them…and parents get the rare luxury of feeling cool, calm and not entirely melted.
