Forget the Rollercoasters: The Magic of Efteling with Little Kids this Autumn
The Lowdown
When we think of Efteling, it’s easy to picture rollercoasters and big theme-park energy. But here’s the secret: Efteling is just as magical for younger children. For under-sixes, there are gentle rides, fairytale villages and whole little worlds designed to fire their imaginations, all wrapped up in a distinctly whimsical, old-fashioned charm that feels unique to Efteling. Beautifully landscaped and impossibly charming — refreshingly free of the garishness you might associate with a theme park — it feels like stepping back in time. And autumn, with cooler days and the summer crowds behind you, might just be the loveliest time to go. Better still, Efteling is just a 90-minute drive from Amsterdam, making it entirely doable as a day trip. Leave after breakfast, be home for bedtime — in theory, at least.
The Vibe
Efteling is the real deal. Beautifully conceived, brilliantly executed and dare we say it, rather tasteful. Everything is polished to the nines and, at times, it feels less like a theme park and more like stepping onto the set of a children’s adventure film.
Don’t be deterred by the scale - tucked away from the mega rides are whole parts of the park dedicated to enchanting little ones — where the pace slows, the crowds thin and the magic really comes into its own.
Play & Explore
Starting with the beautifully nostalgic and whimsical the Sprookjesbos, which dates back to 1952, this is where the old-world charm of Efteling really shines. Beneath a vast canopy of trees, winding paths lead children deep into the worlds of their favourite fairy tales, with something magical waiting around almost every corner.
You could easily spend a couple of hours here alone, wandering between giant talking trees, storybook cottages and fairytale scenes, before drifting along on a gentle swan ride. It is wonderfully immersive — the sort of place where children can disappear into their own little worlds.
Also dating back to 1952 is the Marerijk, another corner of the park, with the same lush landscaping and nostalgic charm as the Sprookjesbos, but with more emphasis on gentle rides, playgrounds and beautifully traditional carousels. This is where younger children can happily while away the afternoon, hopping between the vintage-style attractions, climbing, spinning and exploring at their own pace.
Sprookjesbos and Marerijk will likely be your main bases, but there are plenty of other attractions and activities dotted around the park that work brilliantly for younger children too. And then there’s the beautiful steam train, which circles the entire park. For train-loving three-year-olds, this alone could quite possibly be worth the trip — because sometimes the most carefully planned family day out is ultimately dictated by a small person who has spotted a train.
What are we Eating?
No surprises that Efteling has no shortage of dining options, from luxury fine-dining restaurants to hot dogs and proffertjes on the go. With young children, the fine-dining options can realistically be removed from the equation (unless you particularly enjoy eating your amuse-bouche whilst negotiating with a four-year-old).
And whilst eating on the go is undoubtedly the fastest option, it is actually rather lovely to stop halfway through the day, sit down and recalibrate — ideally before anyone reaches the I’m tired and everything is terrible stage.
Right on the edge of the Marerijk is the legendary Polles Keuken pancake house. Impossibly well themed as a royal household kitchen, its magnificent central stove comes complete with moving doors, utensils and various other bits of kitchen magic that spring to life, keeping small children mesmerised for the duration of the meal.
As if that weren’t enough, children get to decorate their own heart-shaped pancakes (with fruit too, for anyone attempting to limit the sugar rush) and are given little magical cups that light up when filled with water. Quite possibly the most ingenious juice replacement known to parentkind.
Understandably, Polles Keuken is popular, so if you haven't booked, expect a queue. Take this as your strong nudge to book. You're welcome.
Worth the Hype?
The biggest surprise? Efteling is genuinely enjoyable with little kids. It doesn’t have that frantic, overly commercial theme-park feel: think beautiful gardens, fairytale forests, gentle rides and good food. It feels less like a theme-park endurance test and more like a really lovely day out — with only the occasional negotiation crisis over who gets to sit next to who.
