A Family Favourite with One of Oud-Zuid's Loveliest Terraces

The Lowdown

Come 5pm on a warm summer evening, the terrace at Le 4 Stagioni is already filling up. Families drift in after hockey and football collection, or simply because the day has stretched out, the sun is still high, and no one can quite be bothered to cook. Instead, supper is taken outside, overlooking one of the prettiest tree-lined squares in Oud-Zuid.

It’s the kind of place where children are expected on arrival, where parents can exhale a little and where no one really needs convincing. With pizza and colouring pads on the table, children are happily occupied, while parents linger over a glass of wine, looking out across the square.

The Vibe

This is very much a neighbourhood spot—the kind of place people return to rather than discover once. Inside, a converted butcher’s shop sets the tone, with an open kitchen window sending steam and energy into the room.

But the terrace is the real draw: set on the edge of the square, it’s one of Oud-Zuid’s best people-watching spots, with an easy, slightly European holiday feel, especially once the terrace fills up.

What are we Eating?

The menu is exactly what you'd hope to find at a neighbourhood Italian: familiar pizzas and pasta dishes, generous salads and a changing selection of specials. You won't find particularly ambitious or inventive cooking here, but that's never really been the draw. The star of the show here is the terrace, the atmosphere and the effortless family-friendly feel.

The pizzas are full-sized rather than children's portions, so younger diners can share one or simply help themselves to yours. Alternatively, there's a good selection of ‘bambino’ sized pasta dishes.

And then there's dessert. Children are invited into the kitchen to choose their own ice cream, which invariably results in a generous amount of sprinkles and tiny umbrellas. It may not be the most traditional Italian finale, but it is undeniably part of the Le 4 Stagioni experience. Just be warned: once they've done it once, they'll expect to finish every visit the same way.

Worth the Hype?

If you're looking for destination dining, this probably isn't it. But on those evenings when you'd happily swap a hot kitchen for a beautiful terrace where the children are happy and everyone can simply relax for an hour or two, this is the sort of place you'll be glad to know about. That's exactly why it's become such a reliable choice for an alfresco family supper in Amsterdam Zuid.
