Three Timeless Amsterdam Restaurants, That Never Go Out of Style

The Lowdown

There are some restaurants that simply lend themselves to a longer evening out — the kind of places worth booking a babysitter for and lingering at the table long after the plates are cleared. Amsterdam may never be short of exciting restaurant openings, but Domenica, Toscanini and Restaurant De Mark all share something more enduring: classic, timelessly chic interiors, consistently top-tier food and an atmosphere that feels special from the moment you walk in. The sort of trusted places people return to for milestone dinners, long catch-up suppers and those child-free evenings that deserve to feel just a little elevated.

Domenica

Sitting confidently on a Noordermarkt corner behind its striking floor-to-ceiling glass windows, Domenica has quietly become not just a Jordaan favourite, but one of Amsterdam’s most stylish places to spend an evening.

Predominantly Italian in influence, with subtle further European touches, the menu manages to feel vibrant and exciting whilst remaining reassuringly classic at heart. The interiors strike that perfect balance between bold open-kitchen energy and warm, colourful intimacy, whilst the atmosphere somehow manages to feel lively without ever tipping into try-hard territory.

This is the sort of place equally suited to special occasion dinners, fun evenings with friends or simply sitting at the counter with a very good bottle of wine and a beautifully executed plate of pasta on a weekend date-night. Whatever the occasion, just be sure to save room for some Italian dessert indulgence.

Restaurant De Mark

Requiring a short taxi ride out towards the far edges of the city, lakeside Restaurant De Mark, part of the boutique hotel De Durgerdam, feels less like a typical Amsterdam dinner reservation and more like slipping away somewhere far more remote for the evening. And yet, remarkably, it’s barely twenty minutes from the city centre.

Set on the banks of the IJmeer in the impossibly picturesque village of Durgerdam — all historic houses, reeds and wide-open water views — the atmospheric setting feels almost reminiscent of a New England fishing village. In summer, the terrace looks out across the shimmering lake and surrounding reed beds, whilst inside the interiors strike a masterful balance between old-world Dutch elegance and the sort of artsy, softly lit private members’ club you immediately want to settle into for the evening.

One glance at the striking central bar and you’ll instinctively be reaching for the cocktail menu to start the evening, before enjoying the equal parts sophisticated and creative culinary offering — curated by Michelin-starred chefs no less. De Mark has never been the sort of place to shout for attention, but it doesn’t need to. Deeply atmospheric and unfailingly chic, this is the kind of restaurant people tend to discover through whispered recommendations.

Toscanini

One of the most established restaurants in Amsterdam, Toscanini has long since earned its place as a true institution — the sort of place locals know to book weeks in advance. No really.

Almost cinematic in its effortless style, stepping inside somehow feels reminiscent of the golden age of Italian cinema. Think crisp white tablecloths, vintage posters, shelves lined with wine bottles and a bustling open kitchen at the heart of it all. Warm, charismatic service only adds to the charm.

And that’s before even considering the food. Much like the beautifully understated interiors, the menu here follows the same philosophy: authentic Italian cooking, rooted in simplicity and the freshest, seasonal ingredients rather than unnecessary flourish.

Top tip: begin the evening with their aptly named Bicicletta aperitivo before settling in for a long supper. You could call Toscanini one of Amsterdam’s best-kept culinary secrets, although judging by the reservation book, the secret has been out for some time.
